STRIPPED TO THE BONE

Discipline, deconstructed. Not for people who already run marathons. For the person lying in bed at noon, thirsty, too far gone to get up for a glass of water. This is how that person becomes someone who never misses a day.

Get up. Start here

Written from the bottom of the hole. Not from a podium.

IRISEGet up when your own mind is trying to bury you.
IIBUILDLay one small stone a day. Never betray the minimum.
IIIBECOMEStop acting disciplined. Be the man you played.

Most motivation coaches are full of it.

“Just do it.” Okay, Nike. How didn't I think of that?

Not everyone starts from the same baseline.

When you're far gone into depression and laziness, even the things that keep you alive feel like a chore.

How do you find discipline when you don't even want to drink water?

This guide starts there. Where they never do.

THIS IS
NOT A
PODIUM

The author was enormously lazy. Depressed. A useless mass in a bed, recycling thoughts that were decades old. Then he dissected, step by step, how that man became disciplined. No gym membership. No perfect plan. No “just do it.”

Some pages go to the darkest morning he had. If your own mornings sound like that right now, you are not alone and you don't have to climb alone. Call or text 988 in the US, 116 123 in the UK and Ireland, or find a line in your country at findahelpline.com.

A marble hand pushing up out of a heap of grey ash

The lowest morning

A PILE OF BURNT ASHES, SCATTERED ON THE BED

“My thoughts were so dark, giving life-ending suggestions on loop. I felt like a pile of burnt ashes scattered on the bed, unable to pick myself up.”

Somehow he whispered, c'mon man, it's not that bad. You can get up. So he did. He stood in the middle of the room. Puffed his chest. Walked up and down. Then he picked up a broom and swept every spiderweb off the ceiling, every shelf, every corner.

Then a little workout.

He climbed out of the hole that morning. Sweeping became the ritual. It still is.

What's inside · twelve laws

THE MEDITATIONS OF A MAN WHO WAS LAZY

Marcus Aurelius wrote to himself, not to an audience. So does this guide. Every law below came out of a real morning.

I

Stack small wins

Three sets of pushups is a workout. You worked out. You are a person who worked out. The identity changes today.

II

Make it compulsive

No rest days. One workout every day, even if it's only stretching. You never let yourself lose the title.

III

Never betray the minimum

Build more on top if you want. But the bare minimum that first let you say “I did it today” is non-negotiable.Three is not two. Two is a couple. Three is a group.

IV

Use motivation as fuel

Watch the video. Play the song. Why waste willpower? Until discipline is forged, take every advantage you can get.You only need bread. Dough is the enemy. Crazy talk.

V

Checkpoints, not finish lines

Never “try it for a month.” A deadline gives you a place to lower your guard. This game has infinite checkpoints and no end.

VI

Stay in the game

Raining? Cold? You don't have to Goggins your way through it. Walk the ten thousand steps in your living room. The only people who lose are the ones who stop.

VII

Remove the obstacles

Sleep in your running clothes. Sneakers by the bed. Every step between thought and action is a step the lazy voice can argue with.

VIII

Ears, not soul

Friends, family, even your partner will joke, project, and try to keep you the way you were. Hear it with your ears. Never with your soul.

IX

Obey yourself

Make the bed. Clean the room. It isn't obedience. It's an agreement with yourself that you won't lie back down in it.

X

Fall in love with the process

Train for the girl and you'll stop when you get her. Then she leaves too. Be motivated by being that man, not by the prize.

XI

Repair the window

A slip is not proof you're unworthy. If a window breaks you fix it. You don't abandon the house.

XII

The pebble, not the mountain

Forget the ten mountains you should have climbed. Climb the one in front of you. Then the next pebble.

The enemy

THE LITTLE VOICE ONLY KNOWS THE PAST

He acts smart. He sounds right. But he's speaking from what already happened, and he has never seen the future. The guide takes his favorite loops apart one by one, until he has nothing left to say.

He says

“You'll have to dig through the wardrobe for something to wear. Rest first. Maybe someone texted you.”

You answer

I slept in my running clothes. I'm already at the door.

He says

“I've tried and failed so many times. It can't be done. I'll just exist now.”

You answer

Never punish a lack of discipline with more lack of discipline.

He says

“I should have done this years ago. Now it's too late.”

You answer

The ten mountains I didn't climb don't stop me climbing this one.

He says

“You missed the goal. The abs aren't there. What's the point?”

You answer

Reality didn't bend? Then I double down. Triple up.

He says

“Trying hard is lame.”

You answer

Trying hard is the cool thing. The cynic is just scared.

CLAIM THE TITLE TODAY

Do three sets of anything. Pushups, situps, three rounds of shadowboxing. Then come back and press the button. That's the trick the whole guide is built on: you say it, you start believing it, and by believing it you become it.

Come back tomorrow. And the day after. Three is a group. Seven is a week. Four weeks and a month has passed without you noticing.

Why you never go back

QUITTING DOESN'T COST YOU ZERO. IT COSTS YOU DOUBLE.

The months it took to build you, plus the months it takes to lose it all and end up exactly where you started. Move the slider.

Nothing built stays solid

SUCCESS IS RENTED.THE RENT IS DUE EVERY DAY.

Your fortress is built by laying small blocks. Every wall needs maintenance. That's true for the body, and it's true for the mind.

Massive truth

NEVER IDENTIFY WITH YOUR SITUATION

If your situation feels miserable, it doesn't mean you are. Quit identifying with it and start changing it.

You are under no obligation to keep playing the role you played. You can decide overnight what you want to be and walk in that direction. You don't owe anyone an explanation. And you don't need anyone's permission. Asking for advice is often just asking for permission in a mask.

You are what you identify with, not what happens to you.

THE RENT.

Success is rented, and the rent is due every day. THE RENT is the daily app built on that rule, and it isn't for sale. Every copy of the guide comes with one personal key, made for one buyer only. Enter it, the archive gives you your name, and every morning you pay the rent your plate takes one more scratch.

  • Your minimum. Set the bare minimum you'll do on your worst day. One button pays the rent.
  • Your plate. Every paid day cuts a scratch into your own steel plate. In a week the letters are yours. In a month it's scarred.
  • Repair the window. Miss a day and nothing resets. Your days stay on the plate. Pay the minimum today.
  • The voice. Type what the lazy voice is telling you. Get the answer from the guide.
  • Tonight. Remove the obstacles before you sleep, so tomorrow there's nothing to argue about.

From the guide

DON'T QUIT BEFORE YOU TRY. DON'T TRY JUST TO FAIL.

Don't quit before you try. Don't ever disqualify yourself. Don't you dare. Whatever is in question, you don't disqualify yourself, you do not give up until you hear the bell, and that bell is in heaven.

You are alive. There's nothing you can't do. You are alive, my friend, alive. There are so many things a living person can do. Do them, and even if you come up short, you gave your everything. If you're going to lose, don't let it happen by not showing up.

Don't try just to fail. So many people start something to prove to themselves that it can't be done, so they can go back to being miserable, because for some crazy reason they want it that way. Don't do that, ever. Trying hard is actually the cool thing.

Questions

BEFORE YOU START

I can barely get out of bed. Is this for me?

That is exactly who it was written for. It starts with ten minutes of shadowboxing at noon after a day in bed, not a 5am routine. The goal is set by your current capability, then you build.

Is this another “just do it” guide?

The first page calls that advice out by name. This guide is about how to make yourself do it, which is the part nobody explains.

Do I need a gym?

No. Pushups, situps, stretching, shadowboxing, walking in place, a broom. You don't need a membership to build your fortress.

I've failed a hundred times already.

Then you'll want the chapter on that. A slip isn't proof you're not worthy of winning. Never punish a lack of discipline with more lack of discipline. Fix the window, keep the house.

What if the people around me laugh at it?

They often will, because people like things to stay the way they are. The guide shows you how to stay unfazed and treat it as the new reality: “yeah, that's what I do now.”

How long is it?

Short. You can read it tonight. The point isn't the reading, it's tomorrow morning.

I'm in a really dark place right now.

Please talk to someone today, as well as reading this. In the US call or text 988, in the UK and Ireland call 116 123, or find your country's line at findahelpline.com. The author has been there. Getting up is easier with a hand.

Last words

IT IS NOT OVER.IT NEVER IS.

Life is a struggle that you must win. You win it by not giving up. If you fall, pick yourself up again, and again. The time will pass anyway.
